General Business/Management Strategies

Fraudulent disbursements: The five most common types
It’s been said that "cash is king." This is especially true for perpetrators of fraud. But businesses beware: You can become a victim of fraud when no cash is involved.

Wealth Advice/Estate Planning

Time to act before 2008 kiddie tax change
Your capital gains tax strategy could be affected by the Small Business and Work Opportunity Tax Act of 2007. The 2007 tax act made a dramatic change in the so-called “kiddie tax.” Beginning in 2008, the kiddie tax age will increase from “under 18” to the later of “children under 19” or “students under 24.”

Family Business/Succession

Retiring? You may still need liability insurance
A Washington, D.C., psychiatrist was sued years after he'd closed his practice. Will the insurance he carried when he was in business cover payments resulting from the lawsuit? That depends on the policy. Now, more than ever, liability insurance may be the only thing standing between you and bankruptcy – even in retirement.

Physician Services

Medical practices benefit from leadership growth
The 20th century saw the development of dozens of leadership theories, models and studies. And individuals in charge continue to seek ways to be effective in leadership roles – everywhere from the military to the boardroom to medical practices. Physicians and practice managers can apply what is collectively known as modern leadership theory to any situation in which they want to inspire the majority to follow them.

Nonprofit Organizations

Manage your donor lists wisely, ethically
Nonprofit organizations face the challenge of effectively promoting their mission and goals to the largest possible audience while managing ever-tightening budget constraints. As a result, many organizations seek to raise additional funds by selling the names of donors to marketing organizations or by swapping mailing lists with other nonprofits. Although it is legal for nonprofit organizations to share a donor’s personal information with other groups, the lack of donor privacy is a growing concern.

Announcements

Holiday Projects

Our client, The Blood Center of Central Iowa, will park their blood mobile in our parking lot at 1601 West Lakes Parkway, WDM, on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 8am until 11am, collecting blood donations. As the holidays draw nearer, the need for blood always increases. We invite you to stop by and donate as walk-ins are always welcomed.

Each year MHC&S selects an organization as the recipient of our holiday project. This year we are collecting non-perishable food items to fill the food pantries in the surrounding areas of Des Moines and Winterset. If you would like to make a contribution, please bring your food items to the Winterset or WDM offices by Dec. 18. Thank you.

Year-end Tax Planning

Now is the time to gather year-end tax information and schedule your tax preparation meeting. Give us a call today to make an appointment (515-288-3279 – West Des Moines office / 515-462-1882 – Winterset office). Thank you.

Buy/Sell agreements

Does your business have an owner buy/sell agreement? When was the last time it was reviewed? Does it clearly state the "value" of ownership? Is it fair? Much like wills, buy/sell agreements should be reviewed periodically. MHCS has considerable experience in assisting clients with buy/sell agreements and would welcome working with you, whether it is a new agreement or reviewing an existing one. Contact us at 515-288-3279.

QuickBooks – Last class for the season
